Many of you know George as a feature writer and columnist [and author] but you don't know his wry sense of humor, his love of baseball or his knowledge of old songs.  He started his professional career with his "Combing Macomb County" coverage - then moved on to baseball, sports, wine and food, and folksy wisdom.  His secret wish was initially to be a Newsweek writer - but even a Phi Beta Kappa from Wayne State [he only had two B's] wasn't enough to land him a job there.

I loved George Cantor. We were schoolmates and friends first at Roosevelt Elementary, then Winship, Post, Mumford and Wayne. He told me that each time he had to change schools as a kid, he was always nervous but our timing was such that I always got there before him. Once he saw my familiar face, everything was o.k.

When I became a professional folk singer in the mid 1980's, George was kind enough to attend one of my first community concerts at Temple Beth El.  I still have the wonderful column he wrote about my songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and English. It's somewhere here in my Jerusalem apartment...when you make Aliyah, your "stuff" decreases immensely ...you only have room to keep your dearest possessions...

George wrote screenplays for Hollywood in his spare time. He very much wanted to extend his talents in that direction. He was so good at putting that little lump in your throat ...nostalgia was his strong suit and he captured much of our generation, our parents and grandparents too, so well, that I'm willing to bet many of you have a favorite column tucked away in your hearts. HIs memory is forever blessed.
